Grillgrates Fail

Options

I finally broke down and bought some Grillgrates and I think I  made a mistake by letting them get to hot (temp on BGE 900*). I cooked hamburgers on them last night and the hamburgers had a funky taste. I'm hoping that it was just the taste of burnt meat, not ruining the Grillgrates. I'll let you know the next time I cook on them. I've only cooked steak on them once and I really wasn't impressed. I hope they get better as they season, if I haven't screwed them up.

Just an FYI. When we first got ours, I used the IR gun to check the surface temp of the Grill Grates. Consistently run 200 degrees hotter than dome temp. Your mileage may vary.

@tcracing  .. ' I've only cooked steak on them once and I really wasn't impressed.' - Hey brother, with all due respect ... the GG's are ingenious.

I use these religiously, from tri tip to steak to spatchcock chicken to french fries to 'skys the limit' and they are awesome.

The only real thing you need to know is to not use them on temps over 600 degrees (with 450 dome temp being the sweet spot) dome temp.

Also, remember that the GG's add 150 degrees to the dome temp. So, (for example) if your dome says 450, the GG temp is 600 or so.

Good luck, I'm only too sure your gonna love them just as soon as you get them dialed in. Tim

The Grill Grates will run hotter depending on the grill type. I prefer steaks on a regular grate closer to the coals or even cave man style. The Grill Grates are great for Burgers and Pork Chops.
I have had best results at 450 dome.

Yep...too much heat is not the friend of GrillGrates.

Ya man, 900 degrees is not a good thing. As recommended, check your temps with an IR and you will be amazed at how much hotter they get than your dome temp. One more tip, I was going to return mine because marinated foods stuck to them and i was pretty pissed. Spray on some cooking oil, pam, whatever, and food releases like magic. Don't give up on them.

@Jeremiah, these are just sitting in my garage gathering dust. I need these to go to a home. You're actually doing me the favor. I'll ship Monday.

Maybe these things are a little bit overrated or unnecessary.  Just a thought.

I bought them for my webber gasser. Got really tired of replacing with the sh*tty OEMs and they want a fortune for SS grates. These were cheaper by hundreds and will last forever.
