Tiger's Return

To all the golfing eggers out there - In case you were on the dark side of the moon you may not have heard Tiger Woods returned to competitive golf today.  I know it's not Friday but I'm leaning in that direction.  Am i the only one who is tired of the Golf Channel kissing his ass today?

  • I don't follow golf, but (at least when he could play) the ratings were through the roof when he played. Can't blame them for riding that horse as long as they can. He was never the same after his wife went after him with a 9 iron.

Don't think he will be breaking Jacks record.  =)

He lifts the entire game when he's relevant. When he was great, there has never been anyone better. Not even close. If you love golf, you might want to root for his success. It will lead to growth of the game that is desperately needed. Personal issues aside. Although, I wish him no ill will in that regard either.
  • It bothers me more when during the telecast of the tournament when he's 10 shots back and they still insist on showing more of his shots than the actual contenders. I was not watching today so hard to say how annoyed I would have been, but he's coming back, it's a big deal and it's probably worthy of them going overboard. I mean, what exactly are they neglecting during the first round of a relatively inconsequential tournament in order to over analyze his return?

I remember when he was lighting it up and so many were saying he will be the best in history. He was on pace to do it, but you never know what can happen. After Hank Aaron set the record sports commentators would often say someone was on pace to top him, no one ever did. I don't count Bonds. Before he started juicing he was averaging only 23 home runs a year.

No doubt Tiger dominated when he was in his prime. But I have to think Karma got him. He was smug, arrogant and not a good person. Best ever? Not yet, he will have to break Jack's record before I will say that. Am I rooting for him? No. If he breaks Jack's record, I will be the first to call him best ever...I hope he doesn't.

He is hands down the best ever. He has competed in an era of exponentially greater competition. He overcame a focused effort to manipulate the courses specifically to deter his success. His record during a prolonged period is staggering. He is the Michael Jordan of golf. Arguably more dominant than Michael was.
  • @jabam He'll never catch Jack - too old and busted up.  @StillH2OEgger Like the time at The Open when Mike Wier was leading on Sunday Money Day &
Tiger not in contention.  Tiger got more screen time for sure. I know it's ratings but I've enjoyed watching the game without him as I didn't have to see every time he blew one out his ass into the gallery.  If he's in the top 10 fine, otherwise fuggitaboutit.

This. If I recall, viewership of matches went up 30-40% if he was playing the tourney. Broadcasters know who butters their toast so he will be mentioned as long as he plays.

Jack's most impressive accomplishment, in my opinion, was not major victories but top 3 in majors.

  • I'm not sure I can give the nod to Nicklaus, because I don't think number of majors won should be the only measuring stick. Having said that, I was not around for the greatest of Jack Nicklaus' playing days -- except for the 1986 Masters which probably one of the three greatest sports moments of my lifetime. The fields today are stronger and Tiger not only went 150 starts, give or take, without missing a cut, but even with the last several terrible years he has a career winning percentage of nearly 25 percent (about twice the rate of Nicklaus). Also not sure if Nicklaus ever dominated a field like Tiger did while winning the Masters or the U.S. Open at Pebble under horrible conditions. Having said all of that, I'm not convinced Tiger wasn't using performance enhancers of some sort (not Viagra, either).

I don't golf.  No way he returns competitive at his age and with his history.  Probably more like a final tour for an old, admired rock band, that can no longer sing well.

I am grateful for Tiger Woods on Playstation alone.  Had some great foursomes, with some decent stakes on the table, back in the day.

We worked second shift in the shop, then would get hammered and lit, put the money up....made things interesting.  My buddy punched a hole in his wall missing a tap in. lol

I'm happy to see Tiger back. He's unarguably the greatest of his generation. I think he's on par with Jack right now.
I for one am not going to right him off of catching Jack's major record either.  Jack won the Masters at 47, and let's not forget how good of a run Vijay Singh went on winning well into his 40's as well.  If he can stay healthy, Tiger is just too talented not to contend.

Shoot, Freddy Couples and Tom Watson were both contending in majors a few years back.  Tiger still has many years left if his body holds up long enough to cement the swing changes he's had to make.

It must be that Flint water.
  • Safe to say that there will be more than a few of us watching tomorrow's coverage amongst the football games.  Having Tiger playing with Ricky will be interesting.  If he leaves the driver in the trunk like he did today, it should be entertaining.  He is great for the game, regardless of what many think.

if not for Eldrich the PGA would have died years ago.

And Tiger is a **** ton better than Jack any and every day.

This "who's di-k is bigger" exercise comes along every time the current generation challenges the previous with a credible candidate.  All should just relax and appreciate the skill-set that you are privileged to observe and enjoy.
Many examples are out there across sports.  But in the golf world, (I am old) until someone beats the majors record then Big Jack is at the top.  (Never mind the top three finish record he has in those events which elevates his accomplishments further.)
And football career yards/game rushing leader is Jim Brown.
Every decade has their true champions but it is beyond difficult to measure and compare across the spectrum.  Enjoy today.  FWIW-

Keep in mind Lou, every week Jack played there were probably five guys who were good enough to win and three of them were drunk when they tee'd off every day. To Jacks credit he took things more seriously than his contemporaries. In Tigers day there are a couple hundred guys who can win any given week, and they are sober, trained, and focused. It's apples and oranges my friend.

@pgprescott -  you can only beat those who tee it up.  As I said, you really can't measure across the generations but I would offer that  Palmer, Player and the rest of the field were not aiming for second place.  And so it goes-

I like watching tiger, I hope he wins like crazy.

Remember that Jack, while great, is a ****. So is Phil, so was Tiger. Gary Player, and Arnold were true golf ambassadors, Matt might be the best ambassador now. Some reason anyone under 25 favors Fowler.

I really enjoyed watching tiger play at his best. I'd love for some of that to come back.  I don't need to like him as a person.

Ps, Michael Jordan is a ****. He's my favorite.. **** (dafuq?). Larry Bird, another favorite player of mine - Big  D.  Magic is actually nice, so is Barkley, funny as that is.  Shaq might be my favorite person of all time.  That dude is just having fun.

Can't say  d1ck. (Edit). ****  van Dyke show
