Austin BBQ Alternatives

Just saw this on Eater.com. Billed as how to "avoid the line at Franklin BBQ". They visited three other places in Austin; Ironworks, La Barbecue and a place I've never heard of, but has been there since 1940something, House Park Barbecue. The video on Eater's home page includes a food review of House Park. The YouTube vid below is the same, except they chopped off the end and you have to click the "Click to Watch" button at the end to see the rest.

IMO, La Barbecue's plate looks the best.

My favorite part of the vid is Matt Sullivan's (House Park owner) quote...

"No true Texan should ever wait more than 5 minutes for a good plate of barbecue. If we’ve got all this good barbecue here and you’re doin’ that, you’ve failed the Texas IQ test."

I would eat there just for the quote!

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Check out Stiles Switch on North Lamar and Black's on Guadalupe.  I've been here 20 years and never have eaten at House Park.

I'm not preaching at all. I've never even been to Austin and have no plans to visit. Mostly, I just thought his quote was funny. And i'll bet his que is more than tasty.

I'm sure there are plenty of good places in Austin, but if I had the time, I'd still wait in the line at Franklin's.  The folks here who have know Q as well as anyone, and they're not idiots.

I love Rudys BBQ too .. lucky to go to Austin for my work once in a while, so got a chance to hit up most of the joints mentioned here .. I did lose my BBQ virginity at Ironworks, so that place still holds a special place in my heart :-)

I have lived here since 84 (except for a few years in Dallas) and I have never heard of House Park BBQ.  I actually spent some time going to college around the corner from there (ACC) and in searches for parking I must have driven by there 100s of time and dont remember ever seeing it.

I will however now at least make a point next time I am in "town" I will at least drive by and try and jog my memory.

I did go to Rudys tonight for take out BBQ.  My kids love the Moist and I am now a big fan of their half chicken.  Its not the "worst" in TX but the family is happy with it.

Just Vote- What if you could choose "none of the above" on an election ballot? Millions of Americans do just that, in effect, by not voting.  The result in 2016: "Nobody" won more counties, more states, and more electoral votes than either candidate for president.
