Happy Thanksgiving Everyone, I am curious if anyone has cooked a turkey Mad Max style with plate setter legs up on the grate, instead of using the little feet? I am cooking on the XL, seems like ample room. Cant wait for tomorrow :-)
Video one here if anyone wants to watch them in preparation or here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgyT5KVN67U

I was wondering this too, as I don't have the feet. I have a Large BGE

@JethroVA had a good idea of a few smashed cans or balls of aluminum foil. That is what I am going to use.

I learnt that from some of the grey beards on here. Spacers between the plate setter and your cooking surface and/or drip pan will prevent burnt drippings which render an unpleasant taste and smell.Richmond and Mathews County, VA. Large BGE, Weber gas, little Weber charcoal. Vintage ManGrates. Little reddish portable kamado that shall remain nameless here. Very Extremely Stable Genius.

@JethroVA so you would prefer to keep the turkey a bit lower than the normal grate height on the XL? Love the idea of using a few smashed cans.... I also have a few spare 4x4 pavers, I will see if I can break them down. Thanks for the info @eggsurance_agent

At the turkey class we did a couple weeks ago, Max used balls of foil, but you will definitely want some airspace. Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving! Chris

Right on, thanks @Nature Boy

I can also speak to this as I've done this recipe several times.
No space = burnt drippings every time.
Space = Non-burnt drippings. Every time.

I guess the question I am asking isn't if there should be space between the plate setter and roast pan, but instead, can you use the grate on the plate setter if using the XL?

That is how I've done turkeys in my large. A dry fit test might be in your best interest-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Henderson, Ky.

plate setter + copper plumbing elbows + roasting pan = no scorching.It's a 302 thing . . .
