Fig wood, like most fruit woods is absolutely fine for smoking. It has a real sweet smell when smoking however it does not impart any hint of sweetness to the meat. Fig is a real subtle smoke, you can really pour it on heavy without over smoking. The biggest reason that it's not commonly used is its just not as available (or at least in my area) as other fruit and hardwoods. I have used it in the past on pork butts with stellar results. If I had access to it I would definitely use it.
