Weekend Company Picnic

Our first company pinic and I voluntered to do most of the cooking. Will be serving the usual pulled pork, hot dogs, beans, coleslawand  Brunswick stew.My question is how many butts (avg 7lbs) would you fix to feed rougly 80 people. The last thing I want to do is run out of food. Having a little extra left over is much better. We will be serving ro help with portion control. I'm thinking 5 butts ought to do it. What's yall's opinion?

Here you go... Has never failed me...

Number of people X 5.6oz (⅓ lb) / 16 oz = Finished product
Finished product / .6 = Total amount of product

ive always gone with 2.4 servings per pound or 80 div by 2.4 for 33 pounds, then add 1 butt for safety. so 6 seven pounders would be really safe

Hahah... Sorry about that.  I am a math nerd as well as an engineer by trade.

 I promise, it works!  

However, you missed a step.  

80*5.6 = 448

448/16 = 28

28 / .6 = 46lbs total

You can also just take total of people times .6 as well for a little more.  

Essentially, you will need about 46 lbs of meat.  However, you have other stuff, so you can play with your initial 1/3 lb and substitute 1/4 lb.  People will eat less with hot dogs and hamburgers.

When inviting @SGH over, increase your value of amount from 1/3lb to 2lb per person!  lol

I will more than likely cook 6 since they come in a two pack at Sams. Thanks for all yalls input. Im still working on that math. LOL!

6 will work with the other food you are serving unless all the guests are young and male. When you are at Costco just get the 3 largest two-packs they have - sometimes I find 8 or 9 pounders there.

I just cooked 200 pounds of pork butts last month and I lost 50% of the weight in the end.
