Any recommendations for towns to look for apt near by?
We are from NJ, so don't know the area.

    Kinston has declined and has been trying to rebuild since hurricane Floyd in 1999. It does have the Chef and the Farmer restaurant there, as well as Mother Earth brewery. See PBS schedule for the Chef and Farmer show times. Not going to sugar coat it. Kinston has some very bad neighborhoods. Fran in 1997 and Floyd in 1999 decimated some cities in eastern NC. They have been struggling ever since.

    You can find a few nice areas to live in, but remember those areas will be underwater if a hurricane comes through. Take every evac notice seriously, and just play it smart. Know what parts of town you can go to, and stay out of the bad parts.,

    Agree on kinston- neuse river sports shop is the only reason I ever stop there. Probably too far to commute but New Bern is much better spot.

    Yeah, what they said. I don't know Goldsboro but perhaps the eastern side of it? Find a house out in the country?

    New Bern is a much better location, rents at larger apartment complexes can run $650 to $1000. They may include swimming pools and fitness room.  It is a 45 minute commute from downtown New Bern to Kinston.

    Greenville is only a 30 minute commute. Nice college town. Home to East Carolina University.
