Dome thermometer

Lately I been doing a lot of cooking high in the dome.  However, I often end up stabbing the food with the dome thermometer.  I've tried different methods and thought I'd try the thermometer thru a cork to raise it (as seen elsewhere on the forum).  My question, how much of the thermometer needs to be in the egg to get an accurate dome temp?  An inch, half an inch, more?

Thanks
