Wok with no spider

My wife ordered me a 16 in cast iron wok kit for my birthday. I was wondering if you have to have the spider to do wokking. Can i just use the ring that you would use if you were using it on the stove. Anybody ever done this or have any other ideas to try since I do not have a spider?

your wok full round bottom or small flat bottomSalado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

you can use the ring, or you can fill the egg right up with lump and put it right onto the lump

I would use the ring with the grate underneath. Here are some thoughts about wok cooking in general.. Be sure to look into "Breath of a Wok, Joyce Young as an eggcellent source of wokking info.
