competition wood

I am just wondering what the difference between competition wood and regular wood is? I got some wood and its competition wood, I tried a 5.5 peach split and I had to take it off it was so smoky. Is there a difference between the woods? I use chips and chunks, but none of these have produced so much smoke. Just wondering thanks
