brisket and fire

Options
So I am attempting my first brisket, I'm using the travis method, and I get to 300 put the brisket in after 20 minutes or so at 300.  I walked back out about 45 minutes later I'm at 500 and my wood is on fire.  I took the wood chunks out.......any ideas on where or what went wrong?

fire wasn't stable at 300, check your vents.  if you have a big fire it may take a while to heat the ceramic to the temp therefore your fire was bigger than you first thought and it jumped up as the ceramic heated.  shouldn't be any harm though stay calm you got a long road ahead still.
