Has any one built there own oval grid for the adjustable rig?

Just was wondering if anyone has made there own oval grid. I hate paying $45 for a grid...trying to save some money. I was thinking I might be able to just buy a standard 20 inch grid and trim the sides.

    I sometimes see old gassers on the street and I get the cast iron or ss grates,  if any, then have a welder cut them to fit my large eggs.  May cost a slab of ribs or so.  Not a perfect fit, but covers 90% area usually.
