plank salmon, but don't have option for raised grid

First time poster, longtime lurker. I just got my egg on saturday and looking to do salmon for the first time tonight. Only prob is i don't have any pavers/fire stones yet to raise my grid. i want to do plank 'em but fear it won't go well without a raised grid (and don't want to use my place setter if possible as i want to try to plank 'em).

Is it ok to plank them while not on a raised grid? best temp for that? should i just do an indirect cook without plank?

thanks for suggestions and love the site. it's already making me look good with my wife and friends.

    Have done it many times myself without raising it. Follow the recipe in the book that came with your egg. Soak the planks and cook at 350.

    my book doesn't have a recipe but i'll keep an eye on the salmon when it's on the egg

    planks are meant to go direct, and they make it an indirect cook.  never did one on a raised grid.  all a raaised grid does is make the heater gentler by putting the meat further away.  if no raised grid, just drop temps.

    i go 375- 400 at the standard grid level. soak the plank and put the meat on it right away.  the soaking will delay the smoke until the salmon is about halfway cooked.  if it smoked the whole time, it might be a little too much.

  • You can use empty beer or soda cans on the fire ring to hold your grid up

    Good luck on your butt, tee hee, great to hear the salmon turned out well. I forgot to take off the plank as I was tending to the veggie, and all of the sudden the plank that was now empty still on the grid, burst into flames, dang well that 3x use plank just went to 1 x use and break up for smoking chips! So jut remember to take it off the grid! Also you can buy cedar shingles for a fraction of the cost of the planks sold for thr purpose!
