Rookie: First Butt

I am going to cook 2 butts on the egg overnight and am wondering if I need to use larger pieces of lump charcoal or will a bunch of tiny pieces of charcoal be better so that the fire doesn't go out?

Also I thought about putting a chicken under the 2 butts and have them drip down on it.... good or bad idea?
