Lump reducing ring

Could the lump reducing ring be used to cook indirect on a low and slow cook by putting the lump around the outside of the ring? Maybe for ribs? Thinking for a really long butt or brisket you might not be able to get enough lump around it for that long of a cook.

Since one uses a platesetter for the extended cooks to which you refer, a lump reducing ring would be pretty useless.

I'm not sure why you'd ever put lump on the outside of the ring?
