I'd like to make a homemade raised grid for my small. Actually, i'd like to get a set of the delux gratesmates. But alas with ryan and his new sister on the way, mama bear and i are trying to tighten down on the spending. But back to the raised grid, is there a cheap aftermarket grid that will fit the egg? I just got a price for $30 for a standard grid for the small. Anyone found something cheaper that will work? Thanks.

I went to a welding shop supplier a few years ago and found some stainless diamond screen in the scrap pile and had it cut into an apprx circle that fits on the firering. Also had a fire brick cut into thirds and that is my spacer. Been working great for the last 4 years.
Here is a pic of the diamond mesh holding a salt block with a cheese burger on it. Will not do cheese on the block again, very messy..

ahh, i didn't think about that! good idea, will keep that in mind.

You don't need an additional grid, unless you want to do multi-level cooking. For a "raised direct" setup, just use your standard grid shimmed up a few inches to near the felt line. A few pieces of bent sheet metal laid on their sides for instance. They may stay in place better if you shim between the firebox and ring.
You probably have something in your garage that will work fine, no reason to spend a dime. -
measure the egg then go to homedepot, i think its the lump grate for a 18 inch webber kettle that fits. it will rust but i got years from one before it got too bad. they used to be about ten bucks, maybe a little lessfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Gratemates made by our very own "Chubby" are a great product...however the website has been down for quite some time now, and I'm not sure if they are still available for sale....You would have to contact him directly for any details..here's a link to the Naked Whiz's review of them..

Jimmy, this cake cooling rack is my favourite raised grid for small, 3" high with legs, 12" diameter, sits perfectly on top of small bge stock grid for 2-tier cook. Legs are detachable/foldable for easy cleaning/storing. The grids are 3/8" square and perfect for small items like shrimps, mushrooms, etc.
Paid about $6-$7 at a restaurant supply place.

No, that's exactly what i'm looking to do. I want to be ablet to cook multi-tier. I already have a raised setup. Thanks tho!

That is fantastic!! Does it stand up to the higher like 400* or so temps? Do you think amazon might sell it because i don't have a restaurant supply store nearby... that i know if. But that would be perfect. fantastic, thank you again!

thanks, yeah i've heard gratemates are awesome... just don't wanna spend the cash right now.

Where do you get your salt blocks?
Thanks -
Mine was purchased at a farmers market in CA by a friend, but there are a few sites that sell them. Google Himalayan Salt Blocks. Mine is 12x12x2 and works great on the small.

Jimmy,I have no problem with high temp cook, of course purists will tell you don't use anything unless it's stainless steel but I'm not worried. I did a quick google and found this, they call it a steaming rack, this price is good but it told me minimum order must be $25 when I tried to find out the shipping cost. Haven't tried Amazon.

I have a CI grid and the BGE grid for my small and what I will do for a raised cook/multi level cook is I will put some firebricks I had cut on the CI grid and then put the BGE grid on top. A weber smokey joe grid should do the same thing as well. You can pick those up at an ace for about $12. But I would suggest dropping the $35 on the CI grid, I love it.
