Need Advice

I'm cooking 4 butts tonight. I have an LBGE with the following setup (bottom to top): spider, BGE pizza stone, drip pan and my CGS adjustable rig setup for two levels, of course. The butts weigh anywhere from 8 to 10 lbs.

My question regards placement - where should I place the smaller butt: top or bottom level? in other words, where will the temperature be highest?

Also, since I've never done more than one at-a-time, any other advice as to the differences would be appreciated. I wish you could all be here to taste the results!


  • I think I would put the smallest butt down low and the larger butts higher in the dome since the temps are slightly higher in the upper dome area.

    You may also want to put your thermometer in the small butt to start and put it in the larger ones after the small reaches temp.

    At any rate, the butts will probably be done all at about the same time unless there is a significant size difference since your temp range is probably around 195 to 200 and they will all reach that temp range at about the same time.
